Skull Spin

Super quick little project here. I found a cool desktop wallpaper of a skull split into planes which I wanted to recreate in 3D but with a bit of motion.

I took a model of a skull that I had previously sculpted in ZBrush and imported it into Houdini. I used a seres of extruded boxes coped along a line that intersected the model to cut out planes of the skull. This gave me the initial geometry I was after. Using this technique I found I could translate the line throught the model to have the sclices ripple. It gave it a cool holographic effect.

From there I exported that animation to a cache so I wouldn’t have to recaculate the booleans every frame and did a simple animation on the scale of the Skull. I added the rectangular frame as a variation on the 3D effect you get by braking the bounds of a frame (example below).

Once that was all done I set up a simple three point light system and rendered. Whislt simple, I think it worked out really well!
